The current research programme is called Sweden and the Future and was led by Joakim Palme to November 2011. The new director is Peter Hedström. The programme runs from 2009 to 2013 and is mainly directed towards the future matter of population structure and institutions. The studies are made both with a Swedish as well as an international perspective.
The strategies of the Institute is conducted through projects. There are different types of projects and funding. The prioritised projects are given substantial internal funding over the course of three years and are named programme projects. In addition to these there are internally funded projects that are aimed to be developed in a cycle, starting in the form of a development project. Within the research programme there are also specific profile areas, areas where the Institute is conducting well-established research in externally financed projects.
